Employee Spotlight: Susie Stafford

Join us in the spotlight with Susie Stafford

Today we are highlighting Administrative and Finance Assistant Susie Stafford. Susie comes from a benefits background and has been with Steele for six years. We chatted with Susie to learn more about her.

What kind of career did you have before Steele? I was the Benefits Coordinator at Brownsburg schools for 19 years. I retired from there and now I work part-time at Steele. I am familiar with insurance because at Brownsburg I administered the insurance and retirement plans, did new employee orientations, and was also responsible for work comp. I did a little bit of everything while I was at Brownsburg.

How did you get involved with Steele Benefits? I have known Mike Steele for a long time through my previous job and my daughter went to school with Wes and Katy. Mike would call me occasionally and ask me to join the team. When I retired, I finally decided to join. I love it here. I get to help a lot of people.

How would you describe your role in one sentence? My primary role is commissions data entry.

What do you like about your job? I have learned a lot in areas I have never had any experience in. This role keeps my mind active and challenges my thinking. I enjoy it, it keeps me fresh.

Outside of work, what kind of hobbies do you have? I am an intern master gardener. I love the outdoors. I love plants, bugs, animals, and everything in nature. I also enjoy spending time with my family, and I have two granddaughters. When Covid came, I started learning Spanish to pass the time.

What are your top life highlights? The first one would be my family. They are especially important to me. My second highlight would be from my childhood. When I was 13, my brother worked at NASA and I was allowed to tour it. I got to sit in one of the space capsules. I became a space junky after that.

What is the very first job you had (that is not on your resume) and what did you learn from the experience? I was in a secretarial pool when I was 17. I worked at a shoe company. I learned a lot of office skills and I became a shoe connoisseur from working there.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a flight attendant. Unfortunately, I was not tall enough to be one because at that time they had a height requirement.
