Our Employee Spotlight is on an Enrollment Specialist, Joe Lilley. Joe has been with Steele for four years and in the insurance business for almost 30 years. We chatted with Joe to learn more about his background, hobbies, and goals.
Tell us about your professional background before Steele. I have always been interested in insurance. I have always wanted to help people and make sure they understand their needs and how insurance can help them. I was independent for a while and worked with a funeral home and helped people pre-plan their funeral needs, so they did not burden their loved ones. Insurance has always been a rewarding field for me.
How did you get involved with Steele? Over the years, I worked with Mike Steele and when a position opened, I took the offer. Everyone at Steele has always been very professional and cordial. I still get to help people by educating them on what benefits their business is offering, I help them with enrollment or any questions they might have.
How would you describe your role in one sentence? I educate employees on the value of the benefits their company provides.
Do you have a favorite Steele memory? The Steele trips are always memorable to me. Two years ago, we rented a boat in Florida, and we went on a sunset cruise. There were five or six dolphins following us on the sides of the boat. It was great to spend time with my coworkers outside the office and have that fellowship.
What does a typical workday for you look like? I answer calls from the call center, I help new employees sign up for their benefits, answer questions, and call new hires that have not signed up for benefits, so they do not miss their opportunity.
Outside of work, what kind of hobbies do you have? I manage a few rental properties. We love to travel, and I love fitness and the outdoors. This year we are going to Spain to visit my niece in Barcelona. I also love collecting movie star autographs and memorabilia. Some of my most treasured autographs are from old Hollywood stars like Lucille Ball, Mae West, Jimmy Stewart, and Bing Crosby.
We are renovating the Steele office, what is one thing you would like to add? A Ping Pong table, or a pool table would be a lot of fun to play on a break.
What advice would you give yourself at age 15? I would tell my younger self to stay focused on one thing. When I was young, I was involved with so many things. I was a DJ and an actor, and I always wanted to be in the entertainment business. I finally focused on sales because I realized I enjoy helping people.
