Employee Spotlight: Kourtney Kumpf

Join us in the spotlight with Kourtney Kumpf

Steele is proud to bring Systems Architect Kourtney Kumpf into the employee spotlight. Kourtney has been with Steele for almost six years and worked in three different roles ranging from Customer Success to Technology. We chatted with Kourtney to learn a little bit more about her.

Talk to us about your professional background before Steele. People look at my resume and laugh at all my different jobs. I’ve done a little bit of everything. Before Steele, I worked at Celadon Trucking as their Benefits Coordinator. I’m also a certified medical assistant and I worked in healthcare for 10 years where I learned a lot about insurance companies. I’ve also been a flight attendant, bartender and even worked in retail.

When and how did you get involved with Steele? When I was at Celadon, my boss left to work for Steele. Eventually, they contacted me and asked if I wanted to make a change. At the time I didn’t want to change companies. Eventually, I did because the whole idea of working for a family-owned company is what interested me. I liked that they were small, and I could make a difference.

How would you describe your role? I build the enrollment platforms for our clients. We input client information into a computer-based system, and it provides us a shell where we can add their specific plans and requirements.

What are some of your big challenges right now? I’ve got a couple of challenges right now. One is learning the Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). It’s how we send our files to our carriers. We send them updates like clients’ life events, new hires, terminations, etc. I’m also learning Scripting. Both are challenging, but I like that about my role. I like the challenge of learning and mastering something new.

What are some of the coolest things is technology has done for our customers? The Steele team can eliminate paper enrollments! Originally, employee enrollments were done on paper, and keeping track of this paper enrollment and organized is a process in itself. Now, employees can do their enrollments electronically either at work or at home, wherever they have access to the internet. And employers are no longer taking time to notify carriers of these additions/changes for enrollments. Most of our groups have carrier feeds where changes in enrollments are automatically sent over. Coming from a corporate benefits department this makes things so much easier.

What were companies struggling with that we were able to help with? Sometimes employees won’t sign up for benefits, including HSAs, so Steele uses Selerix to help make enrolling in these benefits easier. When an employee is enrolling on their platform and come to these benefits that require additional information there is a hyperlink that they can click on that takes them to an additional website to complete the process. We don’t want employees to miss out on benefits or struggle with setting something up. We try to make it as easy as possible.

Outside of work, what kind of hobbies do you have? I love to craft. My mom and sister and I have a mobile boutique. In the past, we have made wreaths and wool mittens. Now we do embroidery, upcycled flannels, boot bracelets, candles, wax melts, and resin art. I also make custom tumblers and sea glass earrings. With the money from our crafting sales, we go on a family vacation together. This year we are going to Table Rock Lake in Missouri.
