Employee Spotlight Zach Steele

What did you do before Steele? I worked in technology sales for seven years.

When and how did you get involved with Steele Benefits? I met Mike Steele at a charity golf tournament in July of 2017. We had a great connection and conversation, and we talked about camping. He recruited me in the parking lot. He stopped me to chat, and eventually, we went out for a beer. I wanted to get on the customer success side and away from the sales side.

If you could tweak your role, what would you do? I love my job. I enjoy connecting with people. I would love to do that more. I enjoy coaching people and would love to have the opportunity to be a mentor.

Outside of work, what kind of hobbies do you have? I enjoy golf. I also like hiking and kayaking. Mostly I love hanging out with my kids and my wife.

If you had a warning label, what would yours say? Caution, likes to have fun

What celebrity would you like to meet at a bar– I would want to meet Eric Clapton. He is one of the best guitar players of all time. I read his autobiography and want to ask him questions about his life.

Being a redhead with the last name of Steele, how often are you mistaken as a Steele family member? I am mistaken on a weekly basis. People do not believe me when I say I am not related. I often get mistaken for Wes.

What is the very first job you had (that is not on your resume) and what did you learn from the experience? During college, I was a host at Malibu Grill in Bloomington. I am not sure why they had my big dumb mug welcoming people, but I learned that a smile goes a long way.

What would you sing at Karaoke night? During a Steele trip, Wes and I sang the Toby Keith song, I love this Bar. If I sang something on my own, it would be Back Home Again in Indiana. As a kid, my family traveled, and we always sang that song on our way back to Indiana. It was a tradition with my family and now I sing it with my kids when we travel.

Are you related or distantly related to anyone famous? Yes, I am distantly related to Pat Garrett, the lawman that killed Billy the Kid.

What is your favorite holiday? My favorite holiday is July 4 because it is in the middle of summer. It is always warm, and I love the fireworks, grilling, and hanging with family and friends.
