Preparing for the 4th Quarter by Katie Conaway

In the benefits industry, the fourth quarter is our busiest time—our Super Bowl. I work closely with onsite benefit counselors, handling everything from scheduling to meeting preparations. Here’s how I gear up for the hectic season:

Plan Ahead

  • Review all calendars—personal, counselor, and team—to ensure key dates like enrollment periods, training sessions, and deadlines are marked.
  • Schedule as many fourth-quarter meetings as possible in advance. Set clear attendance expectations and ask that any conflicts be communicated to Steele.

Stay Organized

  • Use my task list, populated by our software, to stay on top of current tasks and anticipate upcoming deadlines.
  • Maintain an updated database of counselors committed to working with us and reflect their availability in the scheduling tool.
  • Keep a clean, clutter-free workspace to stay focused and productive.

Self-Care

  • Manage workload by scheduling lunch or break times. Stepping away from the desk for a bit helps me recharge.
  • Reach out to teammates when stuck on a task or in need of feedback. Collaboration often leads to the best outcomes, reminding us we are all working towards the same goal.

By planning, staying organized, and practicing self-care, you can navigate a busy quarter with confidence and efficiency. Remember, preparation is key to a successful benefits enrollment period!
